Become a World-Class Storyteller

People buy books because they want to escape into a story. Your job is to become a phenomenal storyteller. That starts right here.   THE STORY TRINITY is a high-level, macro view of story; what makes it tick and what keeps readers turning pages. We've organized the course around the 3 key areas that will make, or break, your manuscript—character, plot, genre. Character: Character is the most important aspect of every story—yes, even in plot-driven books. Why? Because nobody cares about what's happening unless they first care about who it's happening to. Unfortunately, most character sheets are useless (there, I said it!) because they focus on all the wrong things. We teach you how to craft protagonists, and antagonists, that are so compelling your reader will love, and love to hate, them. And yeah, we include a character sheet that's so spot-on, you'll never need another. Plot: All stories have plots—yes, even in character-driven books. That sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised (shocked…horrified…) by how many books include narratives where nothing happens. Nothing is at stake. Characters' actions have no consequences. There is no tension. No conflict. And no climax. The fix for this is so simple, your jaw will drop. We explain what it is and how you use it to create a plot that is nothing short of riveting. Genre: Writers see genre differently than readers, publishers or agents. To effectively transform the stories in our imaginations to the written page, we need to understand that genre is not one homogeneous thing. Instead, genre has a number of component parts. Understanding them is vital and, as it turns out, is a massive lightbulb moment for authors.

This is for you if...

The Story Trinity is not for you if you love shredding your creating work and putting it in a dumpster, you're ok with wasting the next 5 years of your life, starting from scratch sounds like fun to you, you're looking for a cookie-cutter approach or template, or you want an A.I. prompt.

We get it. We're writers too.

Writing a book can be overwhelming. So can story theory. But it doesn't need to be. We're writers too. We know what happens when the fundamental principles of storytelling are missing. We learned it the hard way—through page-one rewrites. A page-one rewrite is an awful experience… …you might think it will never apply to you, but… …it's way more common than you dare imagine.   We never want to go through it again, so we had to come up with a method for making sure our first drafts are outstanding. That method is THE STORY TRINITY. Now, we're sharing it with you so that you never have to endure the agony of tossing out years of hard work and starting from scratch.   And when your first draft is strong, revisions are a minimum.   During our 20+ years of combined experience, we've been working with hundreds of authors, refining our method and helping them to understand how stories work so they can create rock solid first drafts.   Now, we want to help you.

You don't really want to start over, do you?

Page-one rewrites are real. And they're painful ... very painful. But they're also avoidable, especially when you understand the essentials of character, plot, and genre. Here's the thing.  The key to a successful writing career lies in understanding how stories work, and for that you need story theory. The problem is that there are thousands of resources out there which means you've got to sift through them all to find what you need.  And that takes years.  We know because we've done it.  To make matters worse, there is no common lexicon in this business so the information in one resource might appear to contradict the information in another. (The irony, right?) But, you don't want to be a story theorist. You're a writer. We get it. We're writers too. In The Story Trinity, we're sharing the same tools and resources that we use in our work and that we teach our private editing clients. This is story theory distilled down to its salient points. We're giving you the essentials about character (whether your story has one protagonist or many), plot (with an explanation of how and why stories work) and genre (because writers think about it differently than readers). This is the stuff you must include in your novel or memoir if you want to write a breakout book. It's non-negotiable. Publishing is a tough business and the authors who stand out are the ones who understand how to tell a great story. So, do you want to write a rock solid first draft? Or do you want to risk having to chuck the whole thing in the trash and start over, from scratch ... from page one.

This is why we do what we do.

We explain story theory in a way that's easy to understand and use because for us, there's no greater buzz than seeing authors finally writing the books of their dreams.

Working with Valerie has been the BEST decision and investment with respect to writing my first book. From the very beginning, she not only ignited a spark in my manuscript, but she reignited the spark within myself.

I just wish I had discovered Valerie years ago. I think a lot of the mistakes I made along the way and just getting that first draft down I mean, I think I had to do that just to get it out. But I think if I understood story well a little bit more as I was doing it, it would have saved me a lot of time. Valerie is the best.

Valerie saw the problems with my manuscript but unlike me, she managed to work around them. What a relief! Some of these things I've been thinking about for years now.

I'm so impressed with Valerie's work ethic and her dedication to the craft. It started with what she's invested in going to study in New York and L.A. to become a better writer, and then her years of honing her skill to help other writers. Having read her novel Masquerade, I can say her writing is not only solid, but her execution of a compelling and unputdownable read is impeccable. It's obvious she really knows story.

Rewatching the recording of "Hook Your Reader in 10 Pages or less" by Valerie Francis today, I had a breakthrough on making the antagonists of my WIP more interesting.

I’ve known and have worked with Val for years, and I can honestly say, she knows more about how stories work than just about anyone I know. She's serious about the writing craft, and about explaining story theory in a way that writers can understand and use. Writers have a lot to learn from her.
